We want to give a huge SHOUT OUT to Faith Lutheran Church who just gave a very generous donation to HUGS and to Pastor Adam Dichsen who continues to come up with creative ideas to join the 5K race and support our education fund. On April 3rd, members of Faith Lutheran are encouraged to bring their walking shoes to church in support of our Race for Education! After the worship service, participants will set off to walk the 5k together and enjoy pizza upon their return. I am sure we will have more to share about similar events along with some fun pictures too! Pastor Adam is an instumental member of our HUGS Board.

Pictured are some of the Pillars students who were sent home from school due to non-payment of school fees. Thanks to your support of our Education campaign and Faith Lutheran Church's donation, they were able to return. Proceeds from the Race for Education will go towards the remaining school expenses.

One way, a HUG board member shared the upcoming Race for Education was to

present gifts from Pillar's Empowerment Women's Group to her fellow school staff members.

Jannie McBride had asked her son, Jonas to bring back these gifts from his recent trip to Uganda so she could not only show her teachers at McMillan Early Learning Center in Mexico, MO what the women are handcrafting to raise money for their community but to share how the teachers could become involved in the Race for Education and HUGS. Jannie was so excited to see such positive responses from her school and they loved receiving their own Ugandan gift.

As we continue to get new members to our HUGS team I want to take a moment to share our early beginnings of how HUGS became a reality. In 2016 Jonas McBride went to Uganda to help Patrick Kunihira, the Pillars of Africa Children's Ministry Leader, with a children's conference. They hoped to bring impoverished children together in a Christian setting to help them cope with the physical abuse, poverty and abandonment they had all experienced. Jonas, was able to share his childhood trauma with them and many children for the first time were able to have a voice to express their pain. Since that time, God has brought many supporters to Pillars who are sharing Christ's love everyday and healing emotional wounds. This community is experiencing restoration due to your faithfulness.

Now back to the earlier beginnings. When Jonas returned to Uganda with his family, his mom and dad also spent some time with Patrick. Jonas's mom, Jannie McBride is a teacher in the United States and when she heard Patrick's story of how the children would never get out of poverty without the opportunity of an education she felt God tugging on her heart strings to help them start a school. Soon God brought Melissa Street on board who was the missing puzzle piece who had the leadership and organizational skills to put together our non-profit HUGS so we could connect children to sponsors.

Please take a few minutes to enjoy the following videos recently uploaded to our YouTube channel. In the first video, Jonas tells the story of how Pillars Nursery School began. This short, impromptu video was made March 2022 while Jonas and his father-in-law Kirk Henneberry, Pastor of Harvest Community Church in Decatur, IL were in Uganda. https://youtu.be/DxGzBV1LNM8

The second video was filmed by Alan McKee October 2021 when he visited Uganda while Jonas, Natalie and their children were there. This video tells how God led Patrick and Madinah Kunihira to start the Pillars of Africa Children’s Ministry. https://youtu.be/o2tYNulsqow

God is growing young minds and building Christian character through your continued generosity. God bless each of you for all you do. You are an integral puzzle piece creating God's masterpiece.
